To meet the exigencies of the times the Devonport Methodists held a " specialty day " in the schoolroom on Saturday, at which no article was priced more than half-a-crown. Tho Mayor of Devonport, Mr. H. J. W. Meikle, opened the function.

Mrs. G. R. Ritchie was hostess at a luncheon party given at the Otago Women's Club last week for the wives of visiting naval officers. Another hostess was Mrs. James Begg, who gave a morning tea at her home at Roslyn, the guests of honor being Mrs. M. J. C. de Meric and Mrs. Winch.

It was decided to form a National Ballet Club at a meeting held in Wellington last week. Lady Statham presided and at the close of the meeting a provisional executive was set up. It is proposed to hold meetings every month for lectures, dance demonstrations and displays of original work by members.

Mrs. S. Pearson, president, presided at the annual meeting of the Hikurangi Women's Institute. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year:—President, Jlrs. S. Pearson; secretary, Mrs. Bewick; treasurer, Mrs. Hansell; vicepresidents, Mrs. Dale and Mrs. Edwards; committee, Mrs. Puncheon, Mrs, Sherman, Mrs. A. Piatt, Mrs. B. Piatt, Mrs. Keating and Miss Hansell.

At the annual meeting of the Henderson W.C.T.U. an address was g;ven by the Dominion organiser, Mrs. McLeay. The report of the secretary showed that good work had been done through the year. The election of officers resulted:— President, Mrs. Piatt; vice-presidents, Mrs. McKay, Miss Duncan; secretary, Airs. Barton; treasurer, Mrs. Williams; C.R. superintendent, Mrs. Elcoat; white ribbon agent, Mrs. Grainger; reporter, Mrs. Williams.

There was a large attendance at the Waiotahi Institute's annual meeting, Mrs. L. Looney presiding. The report stated that the membership had increased to 41. The election of officers was as follows: — President, Mrs. Jcffery; hon. secretary, Mrs. Gibbs; hon. treasurer, Mrs. King; committee, Mesdames Jeffery, Gibbs, King, Rau, Fiver, Marx, Grant, and Misses Abbot and Martin. After the election presentations were made to Mrs. Looney and Mrs. Fryer for services rendered to the institute during the year.

A Christchurch playwright, Mrs. V. Targuse, has been advised that she has won the competition promoted by the Chelsea Drama Club, Sydney, although four judges have not yet decided which of the tlirea plays entered by Mrs. Targuse—" Fear," " The Touchstone," and " Rabbits " —will secure the first prize, states the Christchurch Press. The works "Fear" and "Touchstone" recently won for the author the original play competition held by the Wellington branch of the British Drama League, while the third play, "Rabbits," won the ten-guinea prize given by the South Canterbury Drama League in 1930, and has been successfully produced by several repertory theatre societies in New Zealand. The winning play in the Sydney competition will be produced in Sydney in January.

The Kumeu gymnasium clubs combined on Friday evening to hold a "wind-up" social for the year's activities. A splendid programme of games, competitions, dancing and items was arranged, over which Dr.' Harris presided. Presentations were made to Mr. and Mrs. Wardle and appreciation was expressed for the willing services rendered through the year. Mr. Wardle thanked the members and stressed the point of keeping physically fit, not only in body, but in mind. Community singing, with Mr. Cranswick at the piano, was enjoyed by all, and recitations by Miss Gladys Orme and songs by Mr. J. Granville were heartily encored. A competition, the runaway honeymooners, caused much amusement. Supper was served by the social committee, and dancing concluded a most enjoyable evening.
