PORT SAID MEMORIAL

At Port Said, one of the great ocean gateways, has been placed the memorial to the Anzacs of the Sinai and Palestine campaign. On Wednesday it is to be unveiled, and an effort is to be made to broadcast the ceremony to Australia and New Zealand, via London. What memories will be revived in thousands of homes in the Antipodes by this event! The Light Horse of Australia, the Mounted Rifles of New Zealand and the men drawn from their ranks to form part of the Camel Corps, won imperishable fame in the campaign which saw Allenby walk humbly into Jerusalem as its conqueror. History may not yet have taught the true significance of it all. But the deeds of gallantry and records of endurance have their inspiration for the young and their comfort for the bereaved. The unveiling of so worthy a monument for so worthy a feat of arms gives opportunity not only for proclaiming the exploits of the men linked by the name Anzac, but also for paying tribute to the magnificent work performed by their comrades in arms —the British infantry and yeomanry. This army, under Allenby, achieved one of the most complete victories in the history of British arms, freeing Palestine from the blighting yoke of the Turk and removing his menace from the Suez. The splendid piece of statuary commemorating the Anzacs will be a shrine to all travellers from this part of the world.
