WRESTLING CONTEST

WALKER BEATS DETTON

ENDING IN SIXTH ROUND

LOSER UNABLE TO CONTINUE

The professional wrestling contest held at the Town Hall on Saturday evening between George Walker and Dean Detton was one of the brightest of the season. Walker won at the end of the sixth s round, Detton being unable to continue after being thrown several times with side headlocks and then slammed. In the previous round Detton had gained a fall with a body press after having sent Walker to the mat & few times with flying tackles. Detton proved himself a very scientific wrestler, but this science was more than counter-balanced by Walker's advantage in weight and strength. The crowd was smaller than usual, but the spectators were treated to many thrills by Detton's flying tackles and flying scissors. Tho weights were announced at: —Detton, • 13st. 61b.; Walker, 13st. 131b. Mr. C. Pollard was referee.

Detton attacked from tho start and, after partially lifting Walker, he fastened him in a figure four head-scissors. Dettou followed with an armbar and head-scis-sors, but Walker countered with an armbar. The crowd" did not appreciate Walker's action in crawling under the ropes to escape from a double-arm scissors. Loud applauso was bestowed upon Detton when he cleverly applied a flying head-scissors. It was a lively opening round.

The crowd was thoroughly roused early in the second round with each endeavouring to jump on the other in turn. Detton roughed his opponent with headlocks and then he rolled Walker round the ring with a double-arm scissors. Detton's method of making Walker release him by knee-butting greatly amused the spectators. . i ~,

First Fall to Detton

In the third round Walker commenced throwing his opponent with side-head-locks, but was told by the referee not to use the stranglehold. Walker countered, a short-arm scissors with a head-scissors, Detton kicking himself clear and then attacking Walker with a series of flying scissors holds, which excited the crowd. Walker angled for a Boston crab, but Detton kicked him off.

The pair exchanged legholds at the opening of round four, and then Walker hat! to crawl to the ropes to get away from a reverse toebar, the crowd again showing its disapproval. Detton was in difficulties with a sitting double arm-scis-sors, but he kicked his way out.

After being thrown with a side headlock Detton bowled Walker over several times with flying tackles and gained the first fall with a body press, the crowd cheering wildly. Detton was aggressive again in • the sixth round. After throwing Walker with a flying mare he missed with a flying tackle and went through the ropes. He was made very groggy with . side headlock throws and was then picked up and slimmed. He was unable to con* ~ tinue and Walker was declared the winner. Amateur Preliminaries C. Passmore, lOst. 41b., beat F. Thomas, lOst. 21b. The winner was the stronger of the pair and scored falls in the first round with a crucifix, and in the third with a head-scissors, Thomas submitting on each occasion. Thomas obtained a fallin the second round with a body press. 0. Bracegirdle, lOst. 61b., beat H. Patten, lOst. 111b., with falls gained by , presses in" the second and third rounds. K. Kenneth, 12st., beat T. Hill, 12st. 31b., on points. No falls were registered, but Kenneth was the more aggressive. A. Jones, list. 31b., drew with H. Way, list. 51b.
