DEATH OF MAORI GUIDE

MIRIANA WIKIRIWHI CONDUCTED PRINCE OF WALES [BY TELECiItArH—OWN CORRESPONDENT] ROTORUA, Tuesday The death occurrod last evening at th# King George V. Hospital cf Miriana Wikiriwhi, aged 60 years, a well-known guide at Whakarswarewa. Guide Miriana was a daughter of the famous Guide Sophia and spent the early part of her life at Wairoa, being educated at Huhurere College, Napier. She cam# to Whakarewarewa after tho Tarawera eruption. Deceased was or.a of the oldest Whakarewarewa guides, having acted as one for the past 40 years, and she was wall known to visitors from overseas and all parts of New Zealand. She was a memher of the Ngapuhi tribe and married the well-known chief Wikiriwhi Te Tuahu, of the Tulsonranga tribe. Guide Miriana acted as guide to thai Prince of Wales when he visited Whakarewarewa. She leaves eight children. On# of her sons, Hiriome Te Nokai, was a nominee for the Rhodes Scholarship last year. A tangi is being held and a large number of Maoris from all parts of the district is present.
