TROTTING NOTES

WINNERS AT EPSOM AUSTRALIAN-BRED HORSES FIVE SUCCESSES GAINED BY ABAYDOS Our* of tlie features of the Auckland Trotting Club's Spring Meeting was the success of horses imported from Australia, namely, Direct Morning (2), Wiu lluon. Wee Machine and Marble Star. Marble Slar is owned bv Mr. R. Millen, whose son. the lato Mr. R. J. Milieu, in iported Win lluon and Weo Machine three seasons iiko. Happy Voyage, sire of Homeward, also camo from Australia. Win lluon is by Win Alto, who also sired Alto Lass, the dam of Wee Machine. Win lluon, one of the plodding type of trotters, lias been a consistent performer, and last Benson, after registering throe consecutive seconds, won at Thames. At the J line and August meetings at Epsom lie secured third money, and at the recent meeting ho kept up his reputation for consistency with a win and a second. Ho is difficult to train owing to soreness, but C. G. Leo is very patient, with llini and has the knack of keeping him fit without any hard work. Wee Machine is a son of Auto .Machine, and in action very much resembles his highclass sire. He proved costly to his owner, Mr. C. Cowan, during the past two seasons, but since being trained by E. S. Groat ut Epsom has made /rood progress. He won his first race in August, and, after being second to Lady Amanda on October 22. won the. Campbell Handi.-ap on Saturday infine fltyle. Like his sir-e. Wee Machine 13 a good stayer and should do well over a journey. Marble Star, who is by Marble Arch from Yankee Holly, has been racing in Auckland with varying success for several seasons. A few years ago he displayed raro form, winning three handicaps and registering 3.28 1-5, a solid effort for a trotter. In spite of a very peculiar gait, more of the " runner" style, Marble Star does not. lose ground when changing his gait, and this pided him to victory on Saturday when the otliers were breaking. Considering his good second to Moko Hells on the first day. he was at a good price when he won. A Great Run of Success W. E. Cockbill deserves all the success ho is achieving with Direct Morning, who has won four races on end. and has recorded five firsts and one second in his last seven starts. After being imported by H. Hendriksen seven years ago Direct Morning was trained at Epsom by J. S. Shaw for Messrs. Garland Brothers, but. while he showed great speed on the track, lie was not a racing success Two years ago he was acquired by Cockbill, who spent a lot of time in getting him sound. Cockbill then decided to race him free-legged, in which etylo he had won races in Australia, and since winning at the Auckland Winter Meeting he has gone on in wonderful fashion and his run of success may not yet be finished. Homeward, who has heen six times placed in her last seven starts, was a member of W. J. Tomkinson's team before coming north to S. M. August's stable. She showed a lot of promise as a three-year-old and is coming solid with age. Her sire, Happy Voyage, was speedy, and in New Zealand took a mile race record of 2.8 and clocked 2.4 1-5 against time. Homeward'a dam. Grattan Derby, comes from the great Norice family, being by Huia Dillon from Muriel Derby, a daughter of Mauritius, from the American mare Lottie" Derby, whoso sire. Chas. Derby, also sired Norice, who left pood ones, Nelson Derby, Nelson Fame and Native King. There was no better bred competitor at Epsom than Nell Volo, and the mare certainly shows her high lineage, although she was somewhat disappointing in her races. When she ran second on the first day she paid an exceptionally short price, while her performance on Saturday, to get up and win after being in apparently hopeless position, was a sterling one. Neil \ 010 is by the leading American sire Peter Volo, who is standing at a. remarkable figure this season. Her dam, Katie O'Neill, has produced a lot of trotters in the 2.10 class and better, including Neill Volo, 2.SJ, who is a full-brother to Nell Volo. Katie O'Neill is by Walnut Ilall from Ozalua, both of whom are represented by trotters with records from 2.2 to 2.10. Nellota's Good Promise Nellota, winner of the Newmarket Handicap, is a three-year-old who gives promise of reaching a much higher grade. She was bred at To Awamutu by Mr. .7. T. Younii, and last season was purchased by Mr. 11. Mitchell, owner of Mountain Dell. By Nelson Bingen from Lottie Audubon, a daughter of Great Audubon and Silverine, who was by Rothschild from Sylvia, Nellota is bred on splendid lines, and she y follow in the steps of her older halfbrother. Peg aw ay. With F. J. Smith iu the sulky, Nellota began better than usual, and under pressure displayed rare gameness. Smith previouslv won several good races for Mr. Mitchell with Mountain Dell. Brent Zolock, who cleared away from a high-class field in the Remuera Handicap to win all the Way, has stood on the mark repeatedly in his races during the last 12 months. His speed is well known, find with him it is only a case of leaving the mark to bo hard to head off. By Brent Locanda from a Hal Zolock mare, Brent Zolock is bred on sound American lines, and, as, he possesses a reasonable proportion of stamina, he may later be handy over two miles. When in Auckland last season he had a bad fall, injuring his hindquarters to such an extent that it was thought he might have to be destroyed. His owner, Mr. 11. Walker, got him back to Feilding. and, after careful treatment, the pacer has made a very effective recovery. Realty scored two decisive wins, and was decidedly unlucky in no', registering another. He has been very difficult to train on account of unsoundness, but E. S. Groat's patience with him is now bearing fruit. Realty, who has developed a fine tryn of speed, is attractively bred, his sire, Real Guy, being a son of the great Guv Axworthy and a three-quarter brother to Lee Axworthy, who has a world's record for trotting stallions cf 1.585. Others of the an me line are Arion Guy. 1.3!)}. and Mr. McEhvyn, 1.59}. Lady Morland. dam of Fealty, was bred by Mr. W. J. Mori end. of Rakaia, and was got by Lord Chancellor, a, .son of Rothschild and Cissie Wood, by Wildwood Junior, from Lady Elf, whose sire. Prince Imperial, was a direct descendant of llftmbletonian 10. E. G. Sandall's 101st Win Real Guy was also represented on the winning list by Little Guy, whose dam. Sadie Dillon, a daughter of Harold Dillon, also produced Great Hope, a splendid performer, whose victories included the New Zealand Cup in 1923. Little Guy has latclv shown fine fonn over short courses, Jjrit. he should also do well over longer journeys. _ Margaret Wallace, who scored a surprise win in the Junction Handicap, was bred by her veteran owner. Mr. E. G. Sandall. who won two Auckland Cups many years ago. Do rode Tom Hicks to victory in 1891 and in the succeeding yenr scored with Old Judge. Margaret Wallace has raced for several seasons, but her success on Saturday was only her second. Incidentally it marked the 101st. win for Sandall during his lengthy nsociation with trotting. . Other sires represented by winners at the meeting were Peter Moko (Moko Bells). Worthy Bond (Lady Amanda) and A 1 Mack (Stormy Mack). Moko Bells and Lady Amanda are products of Alton Bolls, a rnnre by Gold Bell from Ima Grattan, a particularly well-bred mare. Stormy Mack s dam. Maelstrom, was got by Wildwood from Ihe Black Abdallah mare Miss Poole. Stormy Made was purchased by Geo. Webb for six guineas and is held on lease by Mr. \ . Bnrchard, for whom ho has recorded a win and four seconds in his last six starts.
