NEXT SATURDAY'S FIELDS NEW ZEALAND CUP CONTEST SEVENTEEN HORSES LEFT IN FINAL CLASSIC PAYMENTS [IJY TELEGKAriI—I'RESS ASSOCIATION] CHRISTCHURCH, Monday Final payments for the New Zealand Cup, Stewards' Handicap and Welcome Stakes, and acceptances fur other events on the first day of the Canterbury Jockey Club's Metropolitan meeting at Riccarton next Saturday, also final payments for the New Zealand Derby Stakes, to bo run 011 tho second day, next Monday, and tho New' Zealand Oaks Stakes on Wednesday, November f), fell due to-night. Seventeen horses are left in the New Zealand Cup, tho only withdrawals being Retract, Merry Peel, Colonel Cygnus and Full Mark. There is a field of 10 ill the Stewards' Handicap. DEMAND FOR BROOD MARES TWO BOUGHT FOR AUSTRALIA A number of brood mares belonging to good families have found a fairly ready sale in New Zealand lately and tho latest to change hands are Skydream, an imported mare by Skyrocket, and Par Money, by Paper Money from Paphia. Tho mares have been sold by Mr. E. L. Riddiford to Mr. G. N. Magill, of Erambie, New South Wales. Mr. Magill has purchased other mares in New Zealand during tho past few years and one of his purchases was Nottava, the dam of Gesture, who had with her a. filly foal that won races in Australia as Miss Nottava. Others of hiß purchases in the Dominion include Merry Tiff, Warstar and Royal Exchange. HAAKON UNDER A CLOUD One of Haakon's forelegs has shown signs of weakness and he has been causing his connections some anxiety. As a result bis work has been restricted and he has not been noticed on the tracks during the regular working hours since ho was schooled 011 Thursday. Ilnakon, who won the Pakuranga Hunt Cup in August, in one of the most promising young steeplechasers produced at, Ellerslie inr some time nr.d it will be a pity if the trouble that has been affecting him proves serious.
