MELBOURNE CUP

frO-DAY'S GREAT RACE LAfIOE FIELD ENGAGED Six NEW ZEALAND HOUSES KEEN CONTEST EXPECTED The interest of racing men to-day will be Ct'n red in the Melbourne Cup to be run at Pk-nington. It costs £SO to start, a horse in he Cup, and when the final payment was made a. week ago twenty-eight, horses weie left in. Since then Viol d'Amour has bee i reported to be causing his trainer anxietv, while Silent Bird developed leg tioubl? but later was stated to be making n <rood retoverv. The Dawn Patrol is regarded as an unlikely starter but even if there are a few defections there will still bo a good field. The race is to slat at 3.40 p.m., or 5.40 p.m. New Zealand time. New Zealanders will be particularly interested because of the presence of no fewer than six Dominion representatives, Compris, Admiral Drake, Peter Jackson, Havering, Gaine Carrington and Mana•\\lienua. The last three have all won good races in Australia this spring and recent form indicates that they are not likely to lack anything on the score of fitness. Cornpris, Admiral Drake and Peter Jackson are all solid stayers, and Peter Jackson gave an indication that he was on the improve by running fairly well in the Melbourne, Stakes on Saturday. The form of the Australian horses has been well exposed during the spring meetings, but in spite oi this the race bears an open aspect. The Eanchviek trainer, F. MeGrath. who has had a wonderful run of success lately, holds a strong hand with peter Pan and Denis Boy, whose penalties now bring him to the position of topveight. Peter Pan failed in the Caulfield Cup, but he made amends in the Melbourne Stakes and the chances are that he vill start one of the favourites. If he is as good a three-year-old as he is reputed to Le his prospects should be bright. After his decisive win in the Victoria Derby, Liberal is also likely to have a strong following, as he is stoutly bred and his pedigree indicates that he will prove £, stayer. Liberal's sire, Windbag, won the jace in 1925 Of the older horses, the wellj erformed Rogilia and the Queensland horse Lough Xeagh, are a likely pair, and last year's winner, White Nose, is again in the iie'ld. Yarramba, trained by the ex-New Zeulander, S. W. Eeid, has a host of admirers as a likely light-weight, while Shadow King, who has twice been placed :,n the race, and Middle Watch, the early •favourite, are others who may also be capable of running prominently. Following are details of the field:—

COMMENTS ON THE DERBY RIDING OF GAINE CARRINGTON SYDNEY, Oct. 31 The Sydney Morning llerald says tbe .R.C. Derby was most sensational. Liberal s y.iii over Gaine Carrington was convincing and/ Gaine Carrington's relegation of 'Jop llolu to third place was erjualiy convincing. Before the start Turbine kicked J. Munro (rider of Liberal) on the leg, causing i.iin a painful time while he dismounted imd exercised the leg. The start was delayed «'ii this account. At the entrance to the straight a mix-up occurred. Kuvera, who was among the leaders, almost fell, and his rider, M. Mc- < art en. was thrown. Turbine made the pace 1■ -r Oro, but weakened in the concluding i'lage. Gaine Carrington was not disgraced. .:le had charge at the straight entrance and l ad just beaten off Top Hole, but was unijble to stave of! Liberal's challenge. Gaine '''arriiiuton's rider (T. Green) was overimxious /ind asked the colt for too much in taking him to the front two furlongs from ; : ome, although it is unlikely that he could have beaten Liberal in any case. The Daily Telegraph says that doubts n'iout Liberal's staying capacity were shatifred by his brilliant finish in the Derby. ■M'ann saved him for the last run and the 'olt responded gamely.
