EXTRACTS FROM THE HERALD The following are extracts from the New Zealand llekald of November 1 > .11:182: There was great excitement in town yesterday over the Melbourne Cup. The race was run at a quarter to four o'clock, but we in New Zealand are nearly two hours ahead of the Victorians. The sporting men bad been conspicuous all day in Queen Street with that air of keen unconcern which they always wear, (lis-, cussing the latest news, and doubtless? devoutly hoping that this time tho favourite might nol win. At six o'clock knots of those interested had gathered between the Telegraph Office and the Herald. The message of our correspondent was the first to reach Auckland with the news, and when the momentous message readied the ollico there was a rush to ascertain the event. Within a few seconds " extras " were being issued and the result was soon known over the city. The race was won by an " outsider, ' M r * J. E. Savill's Assyrian. A word of praise i;i due to the telegraphists for the expedition they displayed in the transmission of the messages. • M. Clemonccau, the well-known Frencn statesman, has publicly upheld the righ of England to refuse to agree to a restoration of the dual Anglu-i reuch control in Egypt.
