WORK FOR UNEMPLOYED
REMOVAL OF RAGWORT SCHEME FOR ERADICATION SOUTH AUCKLAND DISTRICTS Relief workers aro shortly to bo employed on several areas in South Auckland in an effort to copo with the ragwort menaco. It is stated that ragwort is particularly troublesome in the southern part of the Auckland province and arrangements have been made between the Labour Department, the Public Works Department and the Agriculture Department to organise unemployed labour to work for the next few weeks in localities most seriously affected. It was announced yesterday that in some cases where there are single men's camps under the control of the Public Works Department the men would be diverted to tho work of spraying ragwort in the district. It was also hoped to get the co-operation of county councils which have established camps und to take the men from the developmental work they were now doing and employ them on ragwort eradication. The men are to be paid by the Unemployment Board and they will be employed on properties the owners of which aro unable to employ labour for the purpose of clearing the land of the pest. The owners will be expected to supply tho sodium chlorate used on ragwort, spray pumps and to provide transport, as well as contributing toward the cost of the labour.
MEN FOR CAMP WORK EXAMINATION REQUIRED Somo of the men employed on relief operations at the Old Stone Jug have been called up for examination as to their fitness for work in relief camps. Altogether, about 60 married men have to bo examined. Those found unfit for camp will return to their jobs, while tho remainder will go to camp when required. None of these men will lose time or employment except in cases where men declared fit for camp refuse to take this work. It has been found that there is not sufficient employment for all single men who are ineligible for camp, and the work is shared by a system of rotation. A number of these men who have been employed at tho Stona Jug for some weeks will now be required to stand down for those who have been drawing rations. Those who are to stand down will in turn be granted rations.
