NOTES BY PHAETON

THE MELBOURNE CUP NEXT TUESDAY'S CONTEST THREE AND FOUR-YEAR-OLDS The Melbourne Cup continues to hold its place us the greatest race in tlio southern hemisphere, and with a field of 28 engaged next Tuesday Flemington will once again furnish a, spectacle fitting to the occasion. A feature in the list of acceptances is the number of three-year-olds. The following nine have been left, in:—Peter Pun. by Pantheon, 7.0; Gaine Currington, by Hunting Song, 7.G; liunch, by Drake. 7.3: Liberal, by AVindbag, 7.3: Oro, by Roger di Busli, 7.2; Oratory, by Verbius, 7.2: Tlio Dawn Patrol, by Tho Night Patrol. 7.0: Eastern Chief, by Eastern Monarch. G. 13: Stroperus, by Verbius, G. 12. Tho victory registered by Peter Pan in the A.J.C. Derby seemed to plaeo him well in advanco of those ho encountered at Randwick this month, but Oro is considered to have, improved in tho interval and in some auartors is preferred to Peter Pan. Victoria's chief hopo is Liberal, who won tho Caulfield Guineas by n display of true grit. Gaine Carrington failed badly in tho A.J.C. Derby when much was expected of him, but good reasons aro advanced for his failure, and it is contended that the New Zealand colt will bo better served at Flemington. Tho four-year-old division may bo expected to furnish tho chief fancies. Middlo Watch, a son of Tho Night Patrol, who with 8.11 has an impost 3lb. less than weight-fcr-age. has lons been the actual favourite. At three years old ho won tho V.Ii.C. fit. Leger and A.J.C. St. Leger. and this season again ho has raced well. Peter Jackson failed so badly in the races he contested in New South Wales as to create tho impression that ho is over-estimated in being callod upon to carry 8.11. Lough Neagh. who has the handy burden 0f'7.13. appears to be well entitled to tho high esteem in which lie is held, for ho shone as a true stayer when he won the Randwick Plate, two miles, three weeks ago. and it is very strongly contended that he is well equipped to battlo his way in a big field. White Nose, 7.11, and Shadow King. 8.12. who finished first and second in last year's Melbourne Cup, are encaged again. When While Nose scored last year ho carried only 0.12, while Shadow King carried 8.7. FOUR-YEAR-OLD CHATHAM FIVE SUCCESSIVE WINS The New South Wales horso Chatham, who defeated a good field in tho W. S. Cox Plate at Moonee Valley, has proved himself to be a brilliant four-year-old. and with five successive victories ho has already placed his sire. AVindbag, in a good position ou the winning sires' list. Chatham is down for an important engagement in tho Cantala Stakes, one mile, at Flemington to-day, in which lie figures as top weight with 9.G. At Randwick this month Chatham won tho Epsom Handicap, one mile, carrying 8.13, and the fact that he beat Rogilla, 8.1, who subsequently won tho Caulfield Cup, adds lustre to his record.

HISTORIC'S LATEST WIN SUCCESS IN lIARCOURT CUP Historic furnished evidence of carrying liifj eight years well when ho won the Waverley Handicap, ono mile and threequarters, at Randwick on October 8. for he carried 9.D and won only after a great battle with Manawhenua. There was good encouragement for mpking the veteran favourite for the llarcourt Clip, ono mile and a-Quarter, weight-for-age, at the Wellington Spring Meeting, and he very amply jußtifitd the confidence reposed in hira by triumphing over Gay Crest in a fine finish. ■flistoric has now contested 82 races, and liis placed performances are as follows:Nineteen wins, including one dead-heat, 10 times second, and nine times third. Historic figures among Hie acceptors for the New Zealand Cup. in which he is handicapped at 9.1. At five years old Historic. carrying 0.5, ran unplaced in the cup. AUSTRALIAN-BRED COLT TWO-YEAR-OLD'S TRENTHAM WIN Red Manfred, winner of the Wellesloy Stakes, for two-year-olds, at the Wellington Spring Meeting, was bred in Victoria. At an early age ho was transported to New Zealand and was reared at Hororata. in the South Island. He was included among the yearlings submitted at auction at Trentham last January and was bought for 200 guineas. Following are Iho leading lines of Red Manfred's pedigree:— Sire: Manfred, by Valais, son of Cicero and grandson of Cyllene, from Otford, by Tressady, son of Persimmon, from Otterform, by Multiform, eon of Hotchkiss. Dam: Redshank, by Thrice, son of The Welkin and grtndeon of Flyiniz Fox. from Red Stroak. by Wallace, son of Carbine, from Elsie, by St. Simon, eon of Galopin. Red Manfred is well engaged in events ahead. The Welcome Stakes at Riccarton next Saturday is his next engagement. CHIDE AND ORATORIAN FATE OF HIGH-PRICED HOUSES Chide and Oratorian, who died\ within a few days of ono another, aro two hioro highpriced horses whose careers have terminated under tragic circumstances. On the strength of Cliido'a series o£ victories in New Zealand in tho spring of 1929 Mr. T. C. Trautwein, of Sydney, bought him for ±'oooo. Chide proved a great disappointment in Australia, and after being turned out for a lest at Maitlancl ho fractured a fetlock, necessitating his destruction. Oratorian cost Mr. It. J. Murphy, of Wellington, 2100 guineas aa n yearling. Hi'b latest form encouraged tho hope that ho would at last repay his owner for tho largo sum expended in his purchase, but a sudden sei'.'.uro immediately after being brought back from Sydney ended his career. In tho autumn of IS9O Titan, a two-year-old gelding by Chester, who had shown marked brilliancy in his racing, was sent up to auction in New South Wales, and. with engagements in tho A..T.C. and V.R.C. Derbies, there was great competition for him, tho lato Mr. E. G. Brodribb buying him for 4GOO guineas. Titan failed to come lip to tho Derby standard, and within a few months ho was resold for GSO guineas. After recording a few minor successes ho dropped dead. After Noctuiform had won several important races in Australia and New Zealand an English sportsman bought him for 5000 guineas. Transported to tho Old Country, he failed badly, and as tho result of fracturing a fetlock in a hurdle race ho was destroyed. Estland, by Finland, was bought for £3OOO by Mr. A. P. Wado, oi Sydney, in the hopes that lie would win a big race, but [his anticipation was rudely shattered. While being exercised on a suburban courso Estland broko a fetlock through putting his foot into a rabbit hole, and he had to be destroyed

STUD ITEMS NEW ZEALAND DERBY lIOrES Drum Firo and Minstrel Lad. two candidates for tho New Zealand Derby, who won at tho Wellington Spring Meeing, are the progeny of New Zealand-bred sires, ths former being by Winning Hit aii(J the latter by Nigger Minstrel. Winning Hit won the New Zealand Derby and tho Great Northern Derby in tho 1921-22 season. Nigger Minstrel is not included among Derby winners, but ho ran Heroic to a head in the Australian Jockey Club's Derby in 1924. MISCELLANEOUS Cluny, who brought otT a surprise victory in the Wellington Handicap at Trentham, is an Australian-bred gelding by Cistercian, son of Friar Marcus and grandson of Cicero. The three-year-old filly Segati. who van second in this yoar's Caulfield Cup, claims its parents two previous winners of the race, Manfred, 192G, and Wynotte, 1928. Sonio Cure, by Sun Curo—Lin Queen, winner of the Queensland Guineas this year, was bought at auction as a yearling for 20 guineas.
