The species ie a very handsome, hardy, deciduous tree with showy pale violet flowers, with dark spots on the inside of the petals. It is a native of Japan. Soluble eulphur, so often recommended as a fungicide, is manufactured from sulphur, lime and oossin, and not from sulphur made into a liquid, as you suppose. The prepared article can bo purchased. Waitoa.—-The iris leaves opened out in a very decomposed condition. Rot, a species of fungus that is most difficult to control, is the disease that emits such a very disagreeable odour. The only remedy is to dig out the diseased plants, cut off any sound portions, and dip them in a solution of loz. of formalin, 10 per cent, to four gallons of water, for 30 minutes. After this treatment plant in new ground. Tho most effective remedv would be to dig up and burn the diseused plants, disinfect the soil, obtain new stock and plant in new ground. Linie should be freely used in the cultivation of the iris family. Kepos.
