ZINNIAS

A POPULAR ANNUAL Zinnias rank next in importance and popularity to Phlox Drummondii among summer-flowering annuals for bedding and borders. They flower with the greatest profusion and remain in bloom for a long period; Previously zinnias have by many been considered too stiff and formal for general garden purposes, but a change has been brought about by the advent of the giant double-dahlia forms and Grandiflora plenissima, the massive heads of which are fairly loosely arranged and make a gorgeous show when massed in large beds. The elimination of the old objectionable purple colours and substitution of art and other popular shades have made this oldfashioned annual universally popular. THE TIME TO PLANT Early in November is the best time to plant all varieties of zinnias. The numerous failures last year were the result of too early planting and not of any disease, as many supposed. However, as the present season appears different from the previous, earlier planting may be made. The tall-growing varieties require to be planted from 15in. to 18in. apart to give the individual plants sufficient room to branch out and properly develop. The dwarf-growing hybrids attain a height of15in. and make very attractive beds. They include some very -unusual shades of creamy pink, rose, orange, scarlet and white bi-coloured and tri-coloured flowers. There is also a miniature pompone strain.
