GIFTS TO MAKE FOR CHRISTMAS
! INEXPENSIVE AND USEFUL Tea Cosy.—Material required: % yard linen. Casement cloth or Russian crash. Bright coloured wools. Depth of the cover to be 12in. width 14in.; allow for turnings. Use a cosy for pattern, and cut out in paper first to make quite sure of correct shape. Turn the cover on the wrong side and sew neatly but strongly. On the right side pencil a pretty flower design—poppies and cornflowers, or pansies and nice green leaves. Work both sides of the cover. To make the lining as well, use the same pattern in sateen and fill with cotton wool. When finished, just tack the cover in, so that it can be removed easily for washing. Cushion Cover. —Material required: Natural or light coloured crash linen or casement cloth, li yards, singly width. Bright-coloured wools. Pencil a big design in the front of the cover before making up. Big daisies and leaves look very pretty. Work in big tacking stitches and chain stitch for the leaves. Turn on to wrong side and sew the seams. Leave one end open, but finish off with three press studs, so that the cushion can be easily put in. Cotton Reel Box.—Material required: Cigar or chocolate box, wallpaper, paste, two steel knitting needles>. corks. First cover the box with any pretty paper. Leave to dry. Then insert the needles inside. If your box is not very wide, these will come through to the outside. To make the box safe, let them stick into the cork at each end. The needles must be easy to move, so that reels can be quickly replaced.
