BOYS' OWN
This is a sixth-century drawing of the first ship that sailed round the world. It was in 1519 that this ship, the Victoria, set out from Spain as part of an expedition under the great explorer Magellan. , . . At the end of three years the Victoria returned to Spain, having sailed across the Atlantic, through the straits named
after Magellan, and across the ocean which the sailors called the " Pacific," or " peaceful." But by the time Spain was reached again the commander Magellan himself was dead with half hit men, and the Victoria was the only ship of the whole expedition (and many started out from Spain with it) to finish safely this first voyage round the world.
