FUN AT THE FAIR

GREY MARE .NOT LONG ENOUGH Farmers and rustics from remote parts of Dartmoor, riding on shaggy ponies a few weeks ago, met holiday-makers from up-to-date seaside resorts at the annual fair of Widecombe-in-the-Moor. Both parties were amazed at the costumes worn by the other. Never had the holiday-makers seen so many savage-looking beards, and the bearded men of the moor had never before seen such scanty, motley costumes as were worn by the crowds from the seaside. The attendance was three times greater than at any previous fair. There was anotHer surprise. Uncle Tom Cobleigh, impersonated by Mr. Edward Dunn, had to bring a new grey mare into use, as the old one had died since last year. But the young grey mare's back was not long enough to accommodate Bill Brewer, Jan Stewer, Peter Gurney. Peter Davey, Dan'l Whiddon, 'Arry Awke, and old Uncle Tom Cobleigh and all. Some of the party had to walk at the mare's side'.
