QUESTION OF A NAME
USE OF WORD " CAFE " A number of French wine-trade journals want to put a stop to the use of the word " cafe " as a name for an establishment in which light refreshment is sold. It is argued that definite harm is done to the prestige of wine and other alcoholic liquors by the practice of always referring to Ihe places in which thoy are commonly consumed as ' cafes." The word is held to give the impression that coffee, a beverage of foreign origin, is the principal drink of the French nation. The difficulty, however, is to find another word, particularly one possessing all the associations of the word which it is proposed to jettison. Nevertheless, suggestions have been made. '1 hoy are rather amusing. One of them is " viniomo," another " vinodrome," a third " maison du vin." They aro not convincing, even to French ears.
