ARRESTED AFTER CHASE
MAN CAUGHT AT PAERGA CHARGE OF VAGRANCY MADE An elderly man, Charles Barclay Dewar (Mr. Noble) stood his trial before Mr. Justice Herdman in the Supreme Court yesterday, on a charge of being a rogue and vagabond. It was alleged than he was found on the night of October 15 ,withotffc lawful excuse on enclosed premises at Paeroa. The Crown Prosecutor, Mr. Meredith, eaid that accused had been surprised while attempting to scale a wall at the back of a store at one o'clock in the morning. He was chased by a constable and a friend and arrested. A bag was afterward . picked up on the route that the man had covered and it was found to contain a number of tools;, an electric torch, and gelignite. The man also dropped a pair of flimsy gloves he had been wearing. Constable Dalbeth, of Paeroa, said at 1 a.m. on October 15 he noticed a man standing on a barrel alongside a fence in an enclosed yard. The man stooped clown, picked up a bag and turned and ran .through a section to a back street. Witness followed him along a street, and into a reserve, and eventually accosted him. He ga\e two false names before he admitted that he was Dew?.r. Witness described the recovery of the gloves that he had seen accused wearing and of the bag of tools he had been carrying. Corroboration of most of. the constable's evidence was given by Cyril Richard Dent, bus driver, of Te Aroha, who had been with him when the man was seen and chased. The case will be further heard this morning.
