FARM HAND CHARGED
VERDICT OF NOT GUILTY A series of charges was preferred against Laurie Marsh, a farm hand, aged 28 (Mr. Hall Skelton), before Mr. Justice Smith in the Supremo Court yesterday. Tho charges were of attempting to commit rape, of attempting to carnally know and of indecently assaulting a girl 14 years of age at Henderson on May 23. There was a fourth charge relating to the same date of stealing a sum of £lO, the property of Joseph Williams. Tho fivst count of tho indictment was not pressed. Evidence was given that accused disappeared from tlie farm on which he had been working on the day of the alleged offence and afterwards was arrested on August 2 on a farm near Inglewood. He then stated that his real name was Samuel Mills. In support of the theft charge evidence was given that a knife belonging to accused exactly fitted marks found on a drawer from which the money was alleged to have been stolen. After an absence of 12 minutes the jury returned with a verdict of not guilty on all counts and the prisoner was discharged.
