HANDCUFFED YOUTH

LEAP FROM A TRAIN INJURED AGAINST SLEEPER A handcuffed prisoner, aged 19 years, narrowly escaped death on October 15 when ho jumped from a train travelling at about 40 miles an hour between Glenbrook and Emu Plains, New South Wales. In spite of his injuries ho staggered into the scrub, but a severe body wound forced him to ask for treatment at a house, where he was arrested. Constable Bugden, of the Loura police, was escorting two prisoners, the youth and a woman, to Parranmtta gaol. Neither prisoner gave trouble until the train had passed Glenbrook, when the youth made a desperate attempt to escape. Ho ran down the corridor carriage, grasped the handle of a door with his outstretched, handcuffed hands, and disappeared as the door flew open. The speed of (lie train, estimated at 40 miles an hour, caused the youth to spin over and over when he struck the ground. A sleeper struck him in the abdomen and cut deeply into his body. Tho fact that his manacles prevented him using his hands to steady himself made the fall more severe. Although he was bleeding from several wounds lie stumbled to his feet and disappeared into the scrub before the train could be stopped. Constable Bugden remained to continue the search after handing over his other prisoner to the guard of tho train, which proceeded on its way. P6lico stations were warned and a party of searchers found tho prisoner. Six stitches wer« inserted in a wound.
