ATHLETIC SPORTS

CRICKET AUCKLAND ASSOCIATION THE SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP FIRST MATCHES TO CONCLUDE The first scries of matches in the first round of the Auckland Cricket Association'*) senior championship will be concluded tomorrow. All games are at an interesting Binge. Present indications are that the wickets will again be on tho soft side, and if this is the cose tho bowlers should hold the upper hand. On the first day of play Pnrncll scored 149 against Eden, which replied with 03 for seven wickets. Parnell therefore has bright prospects of gaining a win on tho first inninc®. In the other match at Eden Park University has played itself into a good position by scoring 252 against Y.M.C'.A., which has yet to commence its innings. Tho match between North Shore and Grafton, last season's champions, at Devonport, is at a most interesting stage. On the first day North Shore compiled 133 and Grafton replied with 81 for six wickets. A good deal would seem to depend on tho present not out batsmen, Bycrley and Cowie. On account of the state of the ground there was no play on the first day in the match at King's College between King'* Old Boys and Ponsonby, and a decision, according to the rules, will depend on to-morrow's play. A start will also i>e made to-morrow with tho third, fourth and fifth grade competitions and the second grade matches will commence to-morrow week, r ollowing are tho teams lor to-i^orrow: — KING'S OLD BOYS Third Grade.—Graham, McArthur, Benle Walton, Keyburn, Madill, Smalloy, Handyside, Fisher, Kerry, Bryan, Eddowes. Tho teams have had little practice, but indications are for a successful year. The teams are well balanced, and the games to-morrow should be evenly contested.
