BATHERS AND SHARK
SENSATION ON BEACH .FIVE MEN IN PERIL Panic reigned on the beach at- Newcastle on October 15, when a 6::t. shark was seen in the breakers a few yards from a party of five men who were swimming close to the shore, unconscious of the lurking danger. For the first time this season the shark alarm sounded, and s there was a wild rush to the water's edge by a large crowd to watch swimmers race for the shore. One bather was. caught- in the '.'drawback" of a wave, and the shark moved toward him. The" swimmer struggled to his feet, and waded to the beach, however, and the shark turned arid swam away. A casual glance at the surf by one of the executive members of. the surf club probably saved the life at least of one of the swimmers. Rushing to the shark bell, he sounded the alarm, and the outer swimmers raced shoreward. Even then the shark got within 6ft. of the- last of the five swimmers toward whom he had made. Surf club members said afterwards that they had had a terrible fright. They expected to see the shark attack the mao who was caught in the drawback.
