COMMISSION'S PROPOSALS " A WONDERFUL REPORT" fnr TELEGRAPH —FRESS ASSOCIATION] DUNEDIN, Thnrsdny A discussion look place to-day at the conference of Iho Associated Chambers of Commerce on a remit which welcomed the final report of tlie National Expenditure Commission, and expressed the hope that the Government would at once take steps to carry out its recommendations. Mr. Stronach Paterson (Wellington) said the report was the, finest tiling of its kind that had been produced in this country. 110 did not suggest that every recommendation should be immediately put into force, but if the Government neglected any recommendation it should justify its neglect. "If wo neglect to support the commission," said Mr. W. Macliin (Christchurch), "we will lose the finest opportunity wo could possibly have, hoped for, and waste the. work of the chamber-', over many years. It is a wonderfjil report." Air. Paterson moved as an amendment, "That tho conference urges on tlie Government that if it decides that any of the recommendations of the commission cannot bo given effect, such recommendations bo referred back for a further report." Mr. A. F. Wright said the commission had made its report, and was dead. If tho amendment were passed, tho commission would have to ho reconstituted. Mr. D. Ruttlodgo (Itivcrcavgill) said he thought that where a Government department was paying it should not be interfered with. The commission recommended that the Lands and Deeds Department should bo transferred from lnvercargill tc Dunedin, but it was paying. Mr. Macliin: A very happy position. Mr. Wright saiil the commission recommended the Departments of Lands, Deeds iind Stamps should bo confined to the four centres. There was to be a saving, by tho transfer, of £6OOO. He deprecated bringing up sectional interests. Mr. P. 0. Srnellio said the report should he a book of words for every chamber of commerce. The remit was adopted, with the addition of tho amendment moved by Mr. Paterson. The addition was altered to read, "that no recommendation from the commission bo disregarded without being referred back to tho samo commission for ft further report."
