ANGLING SEASON
BOTOKUA AND TAUPO OPENING ON TUESDAY PROMISING CONDITIONS [by TELKCinAI'II —OWN COIITIESPONI)ENT] HOTORUA, Thursday Conditions are very promising for the opening of tho fishing season in Rotorua, and Taupo districts, which takes place next Tuesday. The weather lias been fine since last Tuesday, when it cleared after a spell of showery weather lasting ten days. Hie streams in the Rotorua district aie now almost back to normal and the lakes arc at their usual level for the time of year. In the Bay of Plenty district streams arc running moderately fast, but if no more rain falls they will be clear and in good condition. • Taupo streams do not appear to bo higher than usual, and recent rains have brought the level of Lake laupo to about normal. Lake Rotoiti is in good fishing condition and was .a favourite area last season, some splendid bags being taken. Mr. A. Kean, conservator of fish and game, has had a busy season with tlie Ngongotaha and Taupo hatcheries. In the former over 2,000,000 fry have been hatched and over 500,000 at Taupo. Most of them have been liberated in various streams in the districts and liberation will bo concluded during the next few days. Fish have been seen in the lakes earlier than usual this year, the reason for this I being considered to be. the dry winter ! and early spring. On making a survey of spawning streams off tho beaten track Air. Kean was surprised at the largo numbcf of fish in these waters. Thcro is plenty of evidence that there is an abundance of fish in the waters of the district. The road betwecfi Taupo and Tokaanu has beon greatly improved recently. [Within :i radius of two miles of Taupo many fishing lodges have been built during tho past year and at Turangi, which is about two miles from Tokaanu, a small township has sprung up, many privatelyowned fishing lodges having been erected. There have been good bookings at accommodation houses at Taupo. Many angiera are coming from the Ilawke's Bay and Taranaki districts and some wellknown overseas anglers have already arrived in Rotorua.
