RAIN IN CANTERBURY
HEAVY OCTOBER FALL HIGHEST FOR 23 YEARS [by T^LEGftArH —press association] \ CHRISTCHURCH. Thursday After five days of continuous rain all over Canterbury the weather cleared today. Shortly before noon the sun broke through the heavy clouds for the first time after an unusually long period of dull, wet days. After a temporary return to dull conditions, the weather became warn and sunny again in the early afternoon and remained so until the evening, when heavy, threatening clouds gathered from the north-east. It is reported from the country districts that the rain has ceased and that flood waters in rivers and low-lyiing areas of land are receding. The rainfall has been the heaviest in October since 1909, a remarkable position when it. is remembered that half-way through this month indications were that it would be one of the driest Octobers on record. In 19096.17 in. of rain was recorded in October and for the present month nearly sin. has fallen. Since the rain' started on October 22, up to this morning, the fall totalled 3.55 in.
