FIFTY YEARS AGO

EXTRACTS FROM THE HERALD The following are extracts from the New Zealand Herald of October 18, 1882: There is every likelihood of a very keen contest in t'ne coming election for councillors m the new ward of the city, Karangahape. Next week the union with the city will be completed, and already an active canvass is going on for the new councillorships. The Christchurch Diocesan Synod opened yesterday. The commission appointed by the Primate to inquire into and take evidence upon the" best means of imparting religious instruction, in State schools consider "that it is impossible to devise any means of general applicability for doing so, consistent with tha Education Act." The Auckland Diocesan Synod met yesterday in the Bishop's library. With the exception of a lengthy debate in committee upon a motion, by the Rev. CM. Nelson, "re the qualifications of parishioners," the business was for the most part of a formal character. At the Harbour .Board meeting vester day a lengthy discussion took place in reference to the second contract for works in respect to the Calliope Point dock. There were five tenders, and surprise was manifested in the marked discrepancy between the engineer's estimate (£5530) and the tenders, the lowest of which was £2900. Mr. Fallon's tender was accepted. The Northcote Steam Ferry Company has, we leacn, been floated, and a timetable for the steamer will be published in a few days.
