AUSTRALIA'S DEFENCE
DANGER OF INADEQUACY INVASION DEEMED EASY CANBERRA, Oct. 15 Mr. Harrison, a member of the United Australia Party, formerly commandant of the Royal Military College at Dnntroon, speaking on the Budget estimates in the House of Representatives, emphasised the danger of an inadequate defence force. He declared that Australia would not always be able to lean on the British Navy. Mr. Harrison described how easy it would be for an invading force to enter the Commonwealth. The Singapore Base in its present state, he said, was actually a bait to draw an enemy. " We aro living in this most distant outpost of the Empire defenceless," said tho member, " and among the other nations we can only hang our heads in shame at the way we aro relying on their goodwill and on the support of the British Empire."
