OPENING OF SEASON Ideal weather conditions favoured tho opening for the season of the Auckland Bowling Club on Saturday afternoon. In brilliant sunshine, the smooth green lawns looked like velvet, and tho surrounding garden beds were a blaze of vivid flowers in all shades. The grass-covered slopes on the four sides of tho lawns were a shelter from the steady sea breeze which was blowing all the afternoon. The president of the club, Mr. It. M. Hacket, welcomed the members and visitors. A long avenue was made by tho bowlers, and through this Mrs. Hacket rolled the first bowl for the season. The tennis lawns were also opened by Mr. Hacket, who played the first ball over the net and in a brief speech wished the members present a successful and happy season. Several members of the croquet club were present and the lawns were unofficially opened by the president, Sirs, l'egler. Afternoon tea was served upstairs in the social room of the club's pavilion and on tho balcony. Iceland poppies in shades of yellow and orange made charming table decorations and were also to be seen downstairs on the verandah. Among those present were:—Mrs. R. M. FUNCTION AT TAXAPUNA TWENTY-FIRST ANNIVERSARY The opening for the summer of the Takapuna Bowling Club on Saturday coincided with tho celebration of its twentyfirst anniversary. There was a very large attendance of bowlers and their wives as well as representatives from many city and suburban clubs. Sir. C. Cutler, president, welcomed those present and declared the lawns open for play. Sir. Alec Harris, SI.P., also spoke. Sirs. Cutler rolled the jack and threw the first bowl of the season. Afternoon tea was served in the pavilion, where the entire decorations were carried out in the cluli's colours of blue, gold and black. A large birthday cake containing (ho names of each president since the inauguration of the club, was cut by Sir. W. Blomficld. The wives of the bowlers' committee were responsible for the afternoon tea. Sirs. Cutler was the reeipent of a bouquet presented by Sir. Brittian Bull, a past president.
