SUCCESSFUL OPENING LARGE BETTING INCREASE ITNE WEATHER A FACTOR WIN FOR PILLOW FIGHT BRONZE TRAY'S DIVIDEND The Avondalo Jockey Club had a welcome change of luck with tho weather for tho opening of its spring meeting 011 Saturday, brilliant sunshine prevailing in contrast to rain on tho corresponding day last year and 011 many other occasions. The attendance, officially estimated at 0000, represented a great improvement, and totalisator investments rose from £18,512 10s to £27.295, an increase of £8783 10s, or 47 per cent. The course was in excellent order and with largo fields and horses of good class, tho racing was very interesting. A feature was the success of Mr. D. J. Davis, partowner of Phar Lap, with his recent purchase, Pillow Fight. Bronze Tray, owned mid trailed at Whangarei, paid tlio only double-figures dividend of the day when ho won the Avondalo Cup. Delrain just led Pelting rounding the turn, but when they straightened up Pelting shot past the leader. It looked as if Pelting was going to win easily, but Delrain came again in the last furlong, and ran him to a length. Loombination was three lengths away third and On Approval was fourth.
