OFFICIAL OPENINGS HELD FUNCTION AT AUCKLAND GREEN CLUB AND INTER-CLUB GAMES Favoured by beautiful weather conditions tho Auckland Bowling Club's greens were opened for tho summer season on Saturday ill tho presence of a largo attendance of bowlers, visitors and friends. After the National Anthem was sung tho president. Mr. It. M. Hacket. extended a cordial welcome to tho visitors and new members. There were visitors from most of tho city and suburban clubs and he was especially pleased to welcome an old friend and exmember of tho club. Mr. H. C. Clioyce, also Mr. Chancy, of New Plymouth, who had played oil tho Auckland green in a competition against tho club some 20 years ago. deferring to tho Auckland Club's unique position as (he oldest bowling club in New Zealand, Mr. Backet staled that it was not living in tho past. McNab. were among the large attendance at the. official opening of tho Balmoral Bowling Club on Saturday. The president, Mr. J. G. Cameron, welcomed the visitors. He referred to tho fact that the secretary. Mr. A. Yeoman, had completed his 21st year as secretary of tho club, which included also one term as president. Mr. Stallworthy said that in tunes of stress it was a good thing to find such beautiful playing fields in Auckland suburbs, where, amid pleasant surroundings, they could forget the difficulties that they were associated with in everyday life. GLEN EDEN CLUB The official opening of the Glen Eden Bowling and Croauet Clubs took place on Saturday afternoon under ideal conditions. Mr. G. F. Jlosking, president of the Bowling Club, welcomed visitors and friends. He called upon Mr. W. 11. Perkins to present prizes won last season to Mr. M. Sunde, singles championship cup. and to Messrs. ONEHUNOA CLUB Thirty-one years ago the Onehunga Club was established and to-day the only surviving foundation member is Mr. H. J. Davies. At the official opening of the club's greens on Saturday the honour of playing the first bowl of the season was accorded Mr. Davies, who played to the first jack, which was thrown by Mrs. E. J. Gatland, wife of the president. The grounds, gaily decorated with palms, foliage and bunting, weie thronged with visiting bowlers, lady croquet players and numerous guests, in addition to flub members. Tho president, Mr. E. J. Gatland, in officially opening the season's piny, referred to the financial stability of the club, in spite of tho hard times, and of the achievements of its members in provincial tournaments last season. Tho president of the Auckland Bowling Centre, Mr. R. Sheath, announced that every club under the centre's jurisdiction had reported an increase in membership and, with only one exception, they had all agreed to eifler teams for tho pennant matches. Tho past-president of the Auckland Centre, Mr. J. Pascoc, congratulated tho •Onehunga Club on the appearance of the greens and the successes of its members last season. Tho bowling season being officially opened, tho president conducted a similar ceremony on the adjoining croquet green, where Mrs. .T. B. Crawford hit the first ball. Among those present wore:—Mr. W. During the morning light showers fell, but tho weather was fine during tho afternoon. The greens were in excellent condition. The president, Mr. J. McDowell, welcomed the visitors, who included a team which had journeyed from Te Awamutu. On behalf of the club he thanked Mr. L. J. Bayfeld. of the Tourist Department, for his help in connection with tho greens. In declaring tho club open he asked Airs. McDowell to throw the first, jack. Sinco tho annual meeting in August 20 new members have joined, bringing tho total membership to 170.
