PRIVATE HIRE TAXIS
USE WITHOUT METERS PERMISSION IN WELLINGTON Taxicabs without the usual meters are to he pprmitted to operate in Wellington in the future under certain conditions. ■Application was made to the By-laws Committee of the City Council by certain taxi proprietors for permission to run a "private hire" service, anrl the committee recommended the application he approved subject, to the following condition.^:—Licences only to be issued for high-grade cars suitable for this class of Work; the cars to operate from garages and not. from the streets; cars must be. Submitted for inspection as required by the traffic, department; heavy traffic fees to he paid; charges tcj be by mutual arrangement between owner and hirer, but fcot to exceed maximum charges set out in by-law; drivers to be licenced as public motor-car drivers.
