DEATH OF REV. J. MOORE ■: ' - SEAMEN'S MfSSIONER ' The Rev. James Moore, missioner to the Sailors' Friend Society in Wellington, and formerly the Mission to Seamen, over a period of nearly 40 years, died last week at Picton, where lie was spending a holiday. He was an Anglican clergy- ||g man, and was brought out from England by the church to establish the Mission to Seamen in Wellington. Ihe first meetings of the mission were held in ;||f a shed on the wharf, and then at various places until about 28 years . ago, when Mrs. Williams, the wife of Captain W. R. Williams, donated the Inland and erected the building, vhich has been used by the mission ever since. Mr... Moore later suffered an illness and went • to England, Mr. Cox being appointed missioner in his stead. Mr. Moore returned to Wellington, and a difference arose between the church and himself, and he took over the mission as the Sailors' Friend Society, the title by which it has been known ever since, conducting it as an evangelical mission. He is survived by his wife. Practically the last public appearance made by Mr. Moore in Wellington was on the" occasion of ths annual meeting of the Sailors' Friend Ssciety on September 26. At this meeting high tribute to Mr. Moore and his work was paid by the Governor-General, Mr. Justice Ostler and the Hon. J. G. Cobbe.
