TO-DAY'S RACES

AVONDALE PROGRAMME KEEN INTEREST IN CUP TWO A' EAR-OLD CLASSIC CJIAMI'ION HACK CONTEST The spring raring campaign in Auckland will' l>c commenced to-day with tins opening of,the Avoadale. Jockey Club's Spring Meeting. The course is in splendid condition, 'and the fine fiekU engaged should ensure keen racing. Chief interest will he centred in the Avondale Cup and the Avondale Stakes, and the running of the two year-olds in the latter race will attract considerable attention. Following are details of the fields, with a review of the prospects in each rice by " Archer " : 12.10—MAIDEN PLATE, Of £100: colts and geldings 8.2. mares 7.11s 7 fur. Of those carded for the first division. Jonathan. Mahkill and Landlubber are tho only ones with any public form but Belltopper, Good Run and Wee Pat have all shown enough speed on the tracks to be worthy of consideration. On their previpus running Kanapa, Delrain and Booklaw appear to be as likely as any in the second division, but Pelting, Beryl Latour and Loombination have galloped well recently and should have chances. Horses u-ho may be in demand include:— First Division— JONATHAN, mahkill, ' landlubber. Second Division— KANAPA. DELRAIN. Tarporley is under suspicion for unsoundness, but he is a solid horse in this class and should make his presence felt. Thespis has been galloping attractively and is an improver whose prospects appear very rosy. The most likely cf the others may be Royal Visitor. Patutahi and Advance Camp. The favourites may be THESPIS. TARPORLEY. ROYAL VISITOR.. „ 1.40 CHAMPION HACK PLATE, ' Of £300; special weights; 7 fur. st. lb. st. lb. " '5 It is unusual to find ft classic winner still eligible for the hack class, but Midinette has this distinction and her prospects appear particularly bright. She has been galloping well and seems to be well prepared for her task, although she has not had a race since the autumn. Pillow Fight, although he may not bo at his best as a result of a fitoppase in his work a few weeks ago, has been galloping well enough to be considered dangerous, and. the best of the other three-year-olds may be Sea Ruler and Prolyxo. Of the older horses those who may do best are L'AUeiro. Puss Moth and Psychologist. The main fancies may include MIDINETTE, PILLOW FIGHT. ; SEA RULER. 5,30 —AVONDALE CUP HANDICAP, Of £350; li miles st. lb. ®t. lb. The others do not make any special appeal, although Gay Cockade and Catoma mayrun. solid races. Horses likely to be fancied i ° Cl " d ' BAROSCOPE. HUNTING CRY. FiineeSß Doreen and Gipsy Love are both winners and should again race well here. IJ'ne has run two very creditable races and will not bo disgraced, but Spiral would require to improve considerably upon his Wanßnnui running to-win. The prospects of the others are difficult to estimate, but some who have phown speed are Glenromney. Coronis Ony Sheila and Barn Dance. Most support mrube given to PKJNCESS DOREEN. GIPSY LOVE. Hunting Cry will probably be missing and Huntingdon may be better for a run. although he has been spnntuig well enough to be seriously considered. .! here are several oilier possibilities, but investors Inay show a preference ior tho three-year-<>Jdn and support TEA TRADER. Arch Ruler won three of his last four starts last season, and, as he has been galloping well, he may continlio tho good work. Great Emblem's latest track efforts indicate that he is getting back to form and Trishna iB a likely one to malc.o a good, showing. Hawthorn is well conditioned and Master Brierly is a distinct possibility. Others who should be equal to creditablo showings are Tcels, Lady Xmlti. - Bwzl© Call. Glenrata and Claremore, and the race bears an open aspect. Some who may be fancied aro ARCII RULER. TRISHNA, TEELS. S.4O—HENDERSON HANDICAP, Of £125; 7 fur. Bt. lb. Bt. lb. High Comedy, Chief Joy and Speedmtnt are all nicely placed and a repetition oi their best form would make them very difficult to beat. Vandyke and King's Archer aro very fit and it is doubtful whether King's Archer has ever looked belter, eo that ho should run a fine raco, Tho popular fancies may include LA MODERNE. GOLD TRAIL. KING'S ARCHER. FINAL TRACK-WORK PRINCESS DOREEN'S SPRINT A BRILLIANT THREE FURLONGS GIPSY LOVE ALSO PLEASES Ideal weather conditions prevailed for the final work at Avondale yesterday morning and the tracks were hard and fast, tho outside of the course proper, with tho trestles GOit. out. being in most demand. The feature of tho work was a brilliant three furlongs by the Avondale Stakes favourite, Princess Doreen, while Lack showed that ho is fit by returning excellent time for half a milo. A heavy fog hung over tho course for some time after the work commenced, and it was under these conditions that Midinette and Pomp were worked. They sprinted over the last threo furlongs and finished together, with Midinette pleasing much the better. This filly will strip tit this afternoon. Pomp also went more generously tlian ho did on Thursday. . Tea Chat was also Bpnnted in the log. He looks well. However, his performances toward the end of last season were such that ho could not be recommended for today's sprint, and it may be best for his admirers to wait until he starts to race more generously. . Beryl Latour, alone, did not impress in her sprint later in the morning, for it did not seem as if she oould have bettered her 39 l-5s for three furlongs, although she was wide out all the way. Sho might have gone better in company. _ Alloy and British Columbia were not pressed to cover four furlongs ill an easy 54 3-ss. They appear to havo got through a good deal of work. Lack's Four Furlongs Lack, who has furnished into a very nice three-year-old. hit out very freely in his four furlongs spin. He took 14s for the initial fiulons and then came home quite comfortably to return 52s for the trial. Lack was not asked to do his best at any and altogether it was a satisfactory effort. The two-year-old filly Gipsy Love, who won at Napier Park a fortnight ago, accomplished a similar task in 51 4-ss. lhis has come on nicely since her last outing and she will be one of the wellbacked runners in the Avondale otakes. action is as yet not so finished as it might be, but experience will be a factor in remedying this greenness. Any doubts track-watchers had as to tiie brilliancy possessed by Princess Doreen were set completely at rest when her trainer sprinted her three furlongs, the filly having been brought specially from Ellershe by float to become acquainted witu the course. Sho was going fairly fast when she swept past the threo furlongs barrier and was showing great speed for the' first couple of furlongs. Then she appeared to ease a bit, but a kick from her rider (K. Voitre) kept her up to her task and she returned the very fast time of 375. Princess Doreen was well out from the trestles so that the time was remarkably good. The manner in. which she responded when reminded of her task and passed the finishing post full of running confirmed the opinion that 6ho is a born galloper, blie is certainly. going to be very difficult to beat in the Stakes to-day. Oup Horses at Work The Cup candidates, Baroscope, Te Hoia and Antique, were out working separately, all being allotted pace-work. Baroscope and Te Hoia should strip two of the fittest horses in the field for to-day's _ middle-dis-tance contest and tliey will disappoint if they fail to make bold showings. Antique is very bright and appears to have done a lot of work. He should run a good race, but whether he is wound up quite enough to win with 9.12 is just doubtful. Royal Visitor was restricted to a couple of rounds on the plough. Ho has fined down a lot and it is apparent that he has done a good deal of work since his successful trip to the Grand National meeting, where his form over the big fences was outstanding. On looks he must be given a firstrate chance of capturing at least one of the high-weight events at Avondale. It is a long time since Royal Visitor showed pace on the fiat, but he will be racing m his home class this week-end. Toplight, one of the flu rpnse acceptors for the Avondale Oup, was soundly beaten by Motere in a gallop at Avondale the other morning, and it is expected that he will now be allowed to forfeit to-day'fl engagement. Toplight is touched in the wind, and this will not assist him to win a race. He is in the maiden class. „ „ •• The Te Arolia trainer _A. E. Cox has . a nice sort of two-year-old in the Stakes. This is Bonnie Joyce, a filly by Tho Ace, f Marble Star, dam of Mosaic, Mosque and Gigantic. The filly is developing well and it appears ns if she may come to hand early. It will be interesting to see bow she shapes in the classic to-dny. Last season big things were predicted for Knight of Australia, but he had only a few starts and won a minor event at Takapuna nearly 12 months ago. He was restricted to pace-work on the plough yesterday and on appearance he should strip a fit horse in the Champion Hack Plato. Ridden' by 11 Mcßae, La Moderne. began fairly smartly to run the first two 111 27h. three ill 39 l-5s and the six in J. 19. She was travelling «u:.ooth)y all the way and .ran on Strongly at tho end. La Moderne is very bright and mußCiilar and should take a lot ol beating ill tho Henderson Handicap to-day. Royal Gallant (Mcßae) sprinted three furlongß nicely in 30 3-ss. The black Reldinfc has had a solid preparation for his Champion Hack Plate engagement to-day. and. although ho will be opposing a strong field, he should at least make a creditable showing. * «
