BEER BARRELS BURST
The four-cent uries-old inn the Black Horse, at Appleby, near Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leicestershire, was destroyed by firo on Sunday, September 4, only the walls being left standing. Beer barrels burst, and a river of ale ran into the street. Villagers fought the flames before the arrival of the Swadlincote brigade. They formed a chain and threw hundreds of buckets of water on the burning inn. They roscued furniture from the lower floor, but that in the upper rooms was destroyed. Mrs. John Jones, wife of the tenant, was called from church when the outbreak occurred. The picturesque publichouse, <i half-timbered structure with a thatched roof, was a favourite resort of tourists and holiday makers.
tell you I am going to use the gun again, as I have used it before, if you send mo back (o prison; so punish me if you want. Already I have had the most terrible punishment that any man could suffer." Taylor continued: "For fiyo years I have been been trying to be an honest man, and while I was in London looking for work I was tempted, but I said to myself, ' No, I won't, bo a motor bandit again,' and I walked straight into Bow Street station and gave myself up. " It was this titled lady, taking mo in hand after I had served 11 years' imprisonment, that made me try so hard to be honest, but I know if I am sent back to prison it will bo the end of everything, and I shall return to the criminal life I detest."
The magistrate, imposing a sentence of six weeks' imprisonment with hard labour, stated that ho had washed out of consideration the man's past record.
