DEBATING UNION
LEYS INSTITUTE ADDRESS The Leys Institute Literary and Debating Union met on Thursday evening, Mr. J. C. -Black presiding. An address was given by Mr. L Phillips on "Australian Poetry." The speaker dealt with tho history of Australian poetry and stressed the individuality of the contribution of Australian poets to the literature of the world. Selections from the works of Iho poets were read by Mr. T. Vivian. A report submitted showed that the Leys Union representatives were runnersup in the A section of the Athenaeum Cup contest, having defeated the W.E.A., Marist and Grey Lynn debating societies and in turn having been defeated by Papatoetoe, the winners in section A. The final mooting will be held next Thursday, when the subject, "That the world is in danger of becoming overpopulated,' 1 will bo debated. The following will bo the speakers:—Affirmative, Mrs. M. B. Soljak, -Messrs. H. B. Arthur and T. Luxford; negative, Miss King, Messrs. T. Casly and J. G. Kennerly.
