DOG ATTACKS CHILDREN

INCIDENT AT SCHOOL CONVICTION OF THE OWNER Attacks on two pupils of the Edendale school in the school grounds by a large dog, stated. to be a pig dog, were described in the Police Court yesterday, when Robert James Irvine was charged with keeping a dangerous dog. Defendant admitted the offence. Detective-Sergeant Kelly said that at 8.30 a.m. on September 15, while children were playing in the school ground, tho dog rushed in and knocked down a boy, mauling him and biting him in several places. It was driven off by other boys, but returned and again attacked the same boy. After being driven away by a master the dog made a third attack on a girl. Irvine said that the animal, which was a pig dog, played with his child at home frequently, - and when an inspectoi had called to' see it he had declared that it was not vicious. . " I do not think it is safe, said Mr. Kelly. Constable McKenzic, said that the dog was dangerous in the playground, but not vicious. "It seemed to be a cross between a bulldog and a cattle dog and had it mauled the children in earnest it could have torn them to pieces," he added. After defendant had explained that the dog had been sent to a friend's property at Avondale, where it could do no harm the magistrate, Mr. F. K. Hunt, convicted defendant and ordered him to pay costs totalling 31s.
