BOOTMAKERS' WAGES
AGREEMENT REACHED RATES FOR JOURNEYWOMEN [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] WELLINGTON, Friday Representatives of employers and workers in the bootmaking industry came to an agreement at a meeting of a conciliation council to-day. There will be preference for unionists. Provision is made for payment of overtime. The employers agreed that journeywomen's wages should be one shilling an hour and that the rate for thread machinists be £2 9s a week. It was also agreed that where five or more females are employed, the employer shall be entitled to employ one foreman or forewoman who shall not be eligible for membership of the union or restricted by any clause in the award. A disputes and advisory committee comprising two representatives from each Bide with an independent chairman will be appointed in each industrial centre, to whom disputes arising out of the award must be referred before going to the Arbitration Court.
