THE DUTIES ON WHEAT

DEFENCE BY MR. D. JONES NO RESTRICTION ON PIG FEED [FROM OCR OWN CORRESPONDENT] HAMILTON. Friday The question of wheit duties was raised at the conclusion of an address given by Mr. D. Jones, chairman of the Meat Producers' Board, at a meeting of farmers in Hamilton this afternoon. Mr. W. J. Lusty, Te Uku, asked Mr. Jones if the removal of the sliding scale of wheat duties would assist the pig industry. Mr. Jones replied that there had been no duty on pig feed for two years, and pig production had not increased. He found that the pig producer, preferred meat meal to bran and pollard. If the wheat duties were removed, what would be the position if another million lambs or their equivalent in butter and cheese were produced and sent to an already overstocked market ? In answer to a further question, Mr. Jones said there was no dumping duty on wheat by-products, but in levelling up the exchange rate there was an increase in the price.
