TRIPLE GOLF CHAMPION

R. H. BETTINGTON'S RECORD " ~ *-■=; :k J AUSTRALIAN AMATEUR TITLE STATE AND CLUB CHAMPION | R. H. Bettington, by winning the championship of the Australian Golf Club afc Kensington, Sydney, last week, 7 up and 6 to play, became a triple championchampion of his club, amateur cnampion cf Ne*w South Wales, and amateur champion of Australia. Befctington's last, success was principally due to his long and accurate hitting. He was in splendid form in the morning round, and afc the end of it had the satisfying had of 7 up against his opponent, E. K. Lee Brown, a former club champion. A Leavy wind swept the exposed portions of the Kensington links, but. it made little difference to Bettington. He timed his strokes perfectly, and making full use of his length, hit several prodigious, strokes. Going to the 18th, 586 yds., he was on the green with a drive and a spoon, so he must have hit the ball well over 300 yds. from the tee. In this case the wind added to the length of the shots, but the fairways were soft. The wind was directly in Bettington'n face going to the second hole, 440 yds. long. From the tee a hill has to be cleared. Ho drove well, but still had a long way to go to the green. Another perfectly-hit-stroke into the teeth of the gale sent th* ball unerringly to its objective. There are many long drivers in Australia, but, to date it is difficult to compare their efforts. Some day a competition may bjt held to determine the longest driver, sayii the Sydney Morning Herald. Before thit British open championship the long driving competition is one of the interesting features of the championship. In America it is an annual event, and New Zealand hau its driving championship.
