THE CITY MARKETS OVERSEAS FRUIT FAIR PRICES SECURED Good supplies of Sydney and Island fruit wero available at the City Markets yesterday and there was a ready disposal at fair prices. An odd lot of strawberries, tho first of the season, sold at 4s 2d a chip. Tlio demand for apples and poara showed no improvement, all prices being on a par with tlioso at last week's auction. Locally-grown grapefruit and lemons met with only a poor demand at lato rates. Tree tomatoes wero rather dull of salo and prices for hothouse tomatoes wero not good for tho present time of tho year. The demand indioates that buyers uro waiting until tomatoes are in heavier supply. Repacked bananas were again readily placed. Tlio vegetable .market was in fairly heavy supply. Southern potatoes declined about 6d a cwt., but new potatoes met with an improved demand and registered a slight increase in price. Arriving on a practically bare market, Canadian onions sold well ii]) to 25s a cental. There were heavy supplies of cabbages and cauliflowers, but prices were maintained at up to 4s and 5s 6d a sack respectively. Celery and asparagus were also in good supply and average prices were a shade easier. The supply of poultry was small and there was a fair demand. Prices remained on a par with last week. DISPOSAL OF TOBACCO REGENT MELBOURNE AUCTION Catalogues aggregating 60 tons wore submitted by Dalgoly and Company, Limited, at their fourth auction sale of tobacco leaf in Melbourne at tho end of September. At the previous salo on September 7 about 170 tons wero offered. Tho decrease was largely duo to tho decision of the company not to accept inferior quality leaf, for which there is no demand. Although tho best offer of 3s 9d a lb. was 3d less than (ho best price obtained at sales held earlier in tho month, this reflected a difference of quality. Taking only good leaf into account, tho prices realised generally compared favourably with the previous sales. About 50 per cent of tho catalogue was sold.
