EARLY TOMATOES
CROPS IN CHRISTCHURCH Some very early locally-grown tomatoes have appeared on the Christchurch market, and are realising prices up to four shillings a pound. The main picking generally takes place about the beginning of November, and large supplies of cheaper tomatoes are not available until then as a rule. The early crops result from extremely early planting, and a great deal of work on the part of the grower during tho winter. Many of the tomatogrowers in tho vicinity of Christchurch are now installing steam-heating plants for thpir hothouses, however, and it, is stated that the local season is gradually becoming earlier. One grower said last, week that, the early crops were generally smaller than the late ones, and that it was a question whether it was advisable to encourage early growth for this reason.
