MAORI BOY'S ORDEAL

JOURNEY WITH BROKEN LEG SIX MILES ON A SLEDGE [by TELEGRAPH —OWN correspondent] GISBORNE. Saturday A 16-year-old Maori boy named Kihi, who, when endeavouring to negotiate a patch of mud by using stepping-stones, fell and broke bis leg, underwent a severe ordeal in being conveyed to the Wairoa Hospital. The accident occurred on a back-country station and fortunately for the boy he was discovered by Mr. J. Byrne, of Mangapoike. Owing to the damage done to the roads by the earthquake the task of conveying the boy to hospital was a difficult one. He had to be carried on a sledge over six miles of bad slips before it was possible to transfer him to a motor-car.
