RAILWAY SHUNTING

MODIFICATION OF SYSTEM NO ENGINE AT ONEHUNCA As a measure of economy, and to obtain the greatest use of engines, a rearrangement of the shunting services at suburban stations has been made. Ono result of. the alteration is that tho engine formerly stationed at Onehunga has been removed, while tho two engine crews and shunting staffs have been transferred to Auckland. This is the first time for over 20 years that no engine has been permanently housed at Onehunga for use on the branch line and between the station and tho wharf.

Until now engine? have been provided at Newmarket, Penrose, Otahuhu and Onehunga, the locomotive at Onehunga being of a small type. It is now intended to use a moro powerful engino on tho branch lino and for shunting at Onehunga when required, and a heavier type capable of running suburban trains will be sent daily from the Auckland yards. This engine will also do the Penrose work.

It has been the practice to despatch engines for shunting to' Newmarket and Otahuhu at an early hour on Monday morning and to hold' them at tho suburban stations until Saturday, when they were returned to Auckland. This arrangement has been modified, and a heavier type of engine has been brought into use. These engines will be required to carry out train-running in addition to shunting, the time for which has been reduced.
