WHY I COLLECT STAMPS
By LYXETTE ROBINSON, Hamilton All humans are by instinct collectors. Tho naturalist i v collects specimens of natural history, for example butterflies* and moths. The traveller collects curios, postcards, snapshots and similar mementoes of his journeys. The miser collects gold; but my chief hobby is tho collection of stamps.
It is difficult to give any one reason for my choice of this particular pastime. There arc many reasons, now that I have become a collector, why I find it fascinating; but 1 think my interest was aroused when my grandmother gave me a beautiful stamp-album for my birthday about, two years ago. I have now about fivo hundred stamps and am very keen to add to my collection particularly of foreign ones.
Another reason for my interest- in stamps is that they are records of cur- „ rent history. For instance when any important event happens a new stamp is issued commemorating the event. At._ ih*- #• time of the opening of the Sydney Brklgfl. J a new stamp came out hearing a picture of- it. Customs and Railway Stamps are interesting Too as showing, the customs duties of various countries. Thus, when we cannot afford to travel, stamps throw some light on the history and geography of tb« land by which they are issued. T once read that the King is an enthusi- . astic stamp collector and that gave an added interest in my hobby. T wonder if he has in. his collection the samf stamps as I have in mine!,
