PILLAGING FROM TRAINS
NEARLY £IO,OOO A YEAR Losses suffered by the New South Wales railways as the result of pillaging from goods trains total nearly £IO.OOO a year, according to Inspector Watson, of the Railway Department, who gave evidence in a Court case the other day. A young mechanic appealed to Judge Armstrong against a sentence of three months' imprisonment, which appellant pleaded was too severe, and which was imposed upon him by a magistrate, on a charge of having stolen five pairs of rubber boots and a quantity of calico, valued at £9 15s, the property of the Transport Commissioners. His Honor decided, as appellant had no prior convictions, to suspend the sentence upon him finding a surety for payment of £9 15s to the Railway Department,
