DEATH IN QUICKSANDS

THREE BATHERS* DROWNED A triple drowning tragedy occurred at Portishead, a Somerset seaside resort, twelve miles from Bristol, on the night of August 7. Two men, stated to belong to Birmingham, went 'by car to Portishead with two girls—Miss Nancy, Carey and M iss Watts. One man, Mr. E. Green, went with the girls to bathe, but the other man remained in the car.

The bathers had not been long in the water when there were cries of distress, and it was seen that all three were in difficulties. It is believed that they were ctyight in the quicksands, from which a girl had a very narrow escape only a week previously. A Bristol man named Atwell, among others, made gallant, attempts at rescue, but all three bathers were quickly lost to sight and drowned.
