LIVING ON 4s A WEEK
"I was right down sorry for the poor old lady," declared a policeman at Marylebone, London, after giving evidence against Mrs. Rebecca Brookes, a 74-year-old widow, on a charge of begging at Bayswater. Mrs. Brookes was alleged to have offered matches for sale, and asked for help from several people. " She has had a very hard life," stated the policeman. " She" has a pension of 10s a week, out of which she has to pay 6s for rent The magistrate, in discharging Mrs. Brookes, remarked that it was very nice of the constable to say what he did about her.
