LONDON'S RECENT PROBLEM VARIOUS HINTS AND RUSES The host way to keep cool in " the tropics—of London " was discussed there in August. A correspondent of the Daily Telegraph wrote: —

Inquiry in London yesterday showed that " the hot weather problem " is one of those major questions, like health, diet, and miles per gallon, upon which an astonishingly large number of people hold various and decided views. And as day succeeds day with a rocketing thermometer. so do recipes and ruses to counter the bent multiply. [ found that many taxi-drivers swore by boiling tea, " as hot as you can drink it." At one of the large West End hotels one was told that many visitors from the Continent are asking for " half of cocoa, half of coffee, and a dash of cream, shaken up with ice in a cocktail shaker." A woman attendant at, a department store suggested bathing the hands and wrists every half-hour or so in cold water. Perhaps the strangest suggestion was that of an elderly woman going to bathe at th'i " Lido," Hvdo Park. She recommend jd " sniffing tangerine peel with a clovo stuck in it, like my grandfather used to."
