BOROUGH COUNCIL DECISION The defacing of books in the Hawera Public Library has been the cause of some iconcern in recent months. Some subscribers have- developed the habit of writ-ing-remarks on pages, and the whole question assumed serious proportions a few? weeks ago, when it was found that the pages of one book had been gummed together. On the'recommendation of the Library Coiiniittee, the Borough Council decided to write to one subscriber requesting payment of the price of a damaged book and informing him that, should he fail to pay the amount within fourteen days, the council would exercise its right under the; by-laws and exclude him from the Use of the .library for six months. If., possible, the name of a person who written- remarks in another book is lo be ascertained and the cost price of that book recovered with the object of replacement., The damaged book will then be given to the party who pays.
