DAIRY BOARD'S WORK
EXPLANATION TO PRODUCERS VALUE OF ADVERTISING CONTROL OF WHEY BUTTER [from our own correspondent] HAMILTON, FridaV A review of the operations of tho Dairy Produce Board during tho last year was ] submitted in a conference of dairy com- j pany representatives in No. 2 Ward in c Hamilton to-day by members of the ( board. Mr. Dynes Fulton presided, and ( associated with him were Messrs. W. Grounds and C. L. Luke. < Mr. Grounds gave a comprehensive ana- ( lysis of tho board's work during the last year. Ho referred to tho advantages it ( had obtained for tho New Zealand pro- j duccr by its advertising campaign. ( •It was tho aim of the board to ensure that whey butter should not be sold over tho counter in England as New Zealand ( butter, said Mr. Grounds. It was not practicable to eliminate whey butter from the export trade, but tho speaker felt suro that means could bo devised to prevent confusion between this class of product and tho finest butter exported for household consumption. Mr. A. J. Sinclair (Te Awamutu) asked what the board's plans were for tho future advertising of Now Zealand butter and cheese. He considered that advertising was one of tho most important features of tho board's work. Mr. Fulton said the board had overspent its advertising allocation by £3OOO last year owing to its desire to tako advantage of opportunities that had not been foreseen. Tho board recognised the importanco of advertising and would do as much as it could, consistent with its financial position, to promoto further sales. It was resolved " That owing to the expenditure on advertising herd-testing, and research benefiting both local and export sales, the levy should be made on butter and cheese sold locally and that steps bo taken to get tho necessary legislation passed." A motion was carried urging that definite action bo taken at the earliest possiblo date to eliminate the present detriment to best creamery butter constituted by the sale in Britain of New Zealand whey and second grade butters. Messrs. J. E. West, F. 11. Anderson, A. J. Sinclair, J. T. Young and F. O. R. Phillips were appointed an advisory committee for No.. 2 ward.
