DEFEAT OF TE KOOTI
OLD CAMPAIGN RECALLED
On September 25, 1869, Colonel Thomas McDonnell, commanding the Taupo field force, inflicted the first of ft series of defeats on the rebel Te Kooti, who after%vards became a hunted fugitive until all his followers deserted him. In the engagement of September 25 Te Kooti 3 forces numbered between 250 ana 300, and the English and friendly natives opposing them 240. Te Kooti appeared in the morning with his men on the hills above Tokano and began the attack on the pa. The friendly natives threw themselves into the fight with enthusiasm, , driving the Hauhaus from cover to cover until eventually, they turned and ran. The British forces had six wounded and the losses of the Hauhaus were estimated at 30 killed and wounded. They were found to be well provided with ammunition, each man having about 50 rounds of Enfield cartridges. This success wa quickly followed by two even more dfcisive engagements jn which Te forces were known to have losfc more than 30 killed.
